When Martine Vermeulen moved to the Isle of Man from South Africa with her husband, she was keen to make a fresh start and change her career. As she had always had an interest in beauty therapy, she signed up to some beauty therapy courses at University College Isle of Man (UCM) and as a result of her learning and hard work, is now the proud owner of a flourishing beauty salon, Bella Luna, in Derbyhaven.
Before applying for a course at UCM, Martine did some research about the College and talked to the Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy tutors; they were very helpful and guided her to the Beauty Therapy (Level 2) course.
Work and study at the same time
Martine really enjoyed studying at UCM; the hours really suited her and allowed her to carry on working alongside her study, “Although the course was full-time, our classes were timetabled over four days, which meant that I could work while studying. In addition to that, the course really focused on developing my practical skills, which I think is really important.”
Best student
Martine completed the Beauty Therapy (Level 2 and 3) courses at the College and during that time, won the accolade of ‘best student’ for her course which she received at the UCM Further Education Awards. In addition to these full-time courses, Martine also took the opportunity to further boost her skills in specific areas of beauty therapy by undertaking some part-time courses at UCM including the hot stone massage, hopi ear candle and waxing courses.
Excellent tutors
Martine made many good friends while at the College, many of whom she still keeps in touch with today. She has fond memories of studying at the College and especially remembers her tutors, “The quality of teaching was excellent and tutors were always available to help me. I would definitely recommend UCM to others!”
Inspired to open up her own business
While studying at UCM, Martine had the opportunity to meet with former Hair and Beauty students, many of whom had started their own businesses, “I was inspired by their successes and it also convinced me that I too could be a successful business owner.”
After completing her studies at UCM, Martine opened up a beauty salon, Bella Luna, set in the picturesque setting of Derbyhaven. As her business steadily grows, Martine plans to progress further by specialising in skincare and nutrition.
