For any young person, keeping up with your studies whilst working or maintaining a social life, can be a tricky balancing act. 20-year-old Foundation Sports degree student, Emma Hodgson, has the added pressure of fitting in her swimming training for the 2022 Commonwealth Games coming up this summer!
A Passionate Sportswoman
Emma began her journey with us in 2018, studying the BTEC Level 3 Sports course, before continuing to degree level.
“I have always enjoyed sport and loved learning new things to help me with my swimming. PE was my favourite subject at school, so I pretty much knew straight away that I wanted to progress to graduating with a sports degree, and UCM had what I was looking for.”
Supportive Tutors
Emma’s training regime is intense; six swim sessions and two gym sessions a week. Over the last few years Emma has learned how to balance her training, studies and personal life as well as the importance of being able to adapt.
“Since I began studying at UCM my tutor, John, has been so supportive and has always allowed me to put my swimming first when I have needed to. This supportive and understanding approach is one of the reasons why I continued with UCM after the level 3 qualification. I’m pleased that I could do what I enjoy and get an education at the same time.”
“It can be challenging when I have a lot of work to do, but my tutors are really helpful and allow me time to work from home when I am feeling tired, or even the possibility of extensions on my assignments when I am competing off-Island. I am really grateful for their continued support as I would not be able to do it all alone.”
Thinking About the Future
At UCM we pride ourselves on our valuable links to local industry, and providing students with support as they transition into the world of employment. For Emma, turning her passion into a career in the sporting field is where she sees herself in the future.
“I want to find a job within sports on the island. I’d love to mentor and help young sports people to progress to high standards and support them in achieving their goals.”
Keep An Eye Out for Emma!
Flying the flag for the Island at the Commonwealth Games is a huge honour and we’re so proud of Emma for her achievement - we would like to wish Emma a huge congratulations on her selection for the Commonwealth Games team, and best of luck in her races.
“I am so excited to have the opportunity of being selected for the Commonwealth games, I almost feel like it still hasn’t sunk in yet! At the same time, I’m also nervous, but could not be more excited to be heading to Birmingham in July!”.
