Diploma in Childcare & Education (NCFE CACHE Technical Level 3 Early Years Educator)

What is the Course About?

This full time, two year programme combines classroom learning with professional work placement experience. It’s designed for those already working with children or those who aspire to begin a career in early years education and care.

As a gold standard qualification in the sector, it provides the highest level of training and professional practice. By the end of the course, you’ll be well prepared for a rewarding career in early years settings, equipped with the skills, confidence and knowledge employers value.

Throughout your studies, you’ll explore a wide range of topics that are essential for supporting young children’s learning and development, including:

• Child developmental theories

• Observation and assessment of children

• Supporting children’s health care needs

• Play, learning and the early years curriculum

• Child protection and key legislation

• Diversity, equality and inclusion

• Developing your own professional practice

These areas build a strong foundation for working effectively and responsibly within early years environments.

Will I need a DBS check for this course?

Yes. Our Employability Skills Coordinator will help you complete this once you have started your course.

Will I need any specific resources, uniform and/or kit?

No, there is no specific uniform or resources required.

What are the days and hours of the course?

You’ll spend three full days at UCM and two full days on work placement each week.

Your detailed timetable will be provided during Induction in September.

Will I undertake a work placement as part of the course?

Yes, you will complete two full days per week in an early years placement, gaining invaluable hands-on experience with children.

What are my progression and career options?

After completing your qualification, you can progress directly into employment as an Early Years Educator, or you may choose to continue your studies at University, depending on the grade you achieve.

Career opportunities often include roles such as:

• Early years practitioner

• Nursery assistant (progressing to Manager with experience)

• Classroom assistant in a primary school

• Private nanny

• Playworker

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is continuous and based on a portfolio of evidence alongside written assignments that demonstrate your skills, knowledge and placement experience.

Entry requirements

• Four GCSEs at grade C or above or equivalent including Mathematics and English language

• A genuine desire to work with children and young people.

• Experience of working with children and young people is advantageous.

• A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check to ensure that you are suitable to work with children and a health check will need to be completed.
