City & Guilds NVQ Level 2 in Hospitality and Catering

What is the Course About?

Learners will work towards achieving a Level 2 NVQ in Professional Cookery, alongside developing wider skills required for employment in the hospitality industry.

• Customer care / create a positive impression / communication skills
• Correct service of food and drink
• Follow correct food safety when preparing, cooking, storing, holding and serving food
• Maintain, handle and clean knives
• Preparing, cooking and finishing vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, stocks, sauces, bread and dough products, and hot and cold desserts

Will I need a DBS check for this course?

No

Will I need any specific resources, uniform and/or kit?

•Food Service/Restaurant Uniform (Black Shirt, Black Trousers, Grey Apron, Grey Tie, Black Shoes)

•Chef Uniform (Hat, Jacket, Trousers, Apron, Non-Slip Shoes)

•Set of Professional Chef Knives

You will be invited to an applicant day to receive course information and a full kit list sometime between 22nd June to 2nd July – exact date to be confirmed.

What are the days and hours of the course?

16 - 18 hours per week. Your confirmed timetable will be given to you during induction week.

What are my progression and career options?

On successful completion, learners may progress to a Level 3 qualificationor move directly into employment within the industry.

How will I be assessed?

•Tutor observation of practical tasks in the training environment or workplace.

•Multiple choice knowledge tests, set by City & Guilds.

Assessment will only take place when the candidate feels confident and ready to be assessed.

Entry requirements

• A keen interest in Catering, Hospitality and Food Service

• Sufficient relevant work experience for mature learners

• A minimum of three GCSEs, grade D or above. You can re-sit English or Maths alongside this course if you have a D

  • Successful completion of UCM full time Level 1 Hospitality programme

GCSE English and Maths are desirable; however, applicants may also be accepted based on strong evidence of motivation and commitment to the hospitality and catering sector. This can include previous part-time work, volunteering, involvement in food or service-related activities, or any other examples that show a genuine desire to progress in this field.
