Personal wellbeing

UCM’s Welfare Team is made up of three Student Welfare Officers: Jessica, Helen and Lisa. We are part of Student Services, and we are here to support you with any issues you may be having that are affecting your ability to stay on your course or achieve your best at UCM, such as:

  • Transition from school to UCM
  • Managing anxiety, stress and anger
  • Exam/assignment worries
  • Time-management
  • Conflict-resolution
  • Building confidence
  • Relationship issues
  • Emotional issues
  • Bullying

We understand that asking for help can be a hard step to take, and it might even make you feel a bit embarrassed. We take your privacy very seriously, which is why you can come straight to the welfare office for your appointment. Here you can speak to us in confidence about anything you may be upset or worried about.

UCM students can find out more about the Student Welfare team, including how to make an appointment and some Frequently Asked Questions on the Student Hub.

We can help with a number of issues including:

There are several ways to make an appointment with us:

  • Fill in the online form here
  • Email us at welfare@ucm.ac.im
  • Phone us
    • Jessica – 648367
    • Helen – 648284
    • Lisa – 648350
  • Drop into Student Services or the Welfare Office and ask for a Welfare Officer
  • Ask your tutor to refer you to us

After we get your referral, one of us will contact you to arrange an assessment appointment. This will normally last about half an hour, and we’ll go over all the reasons you’re looking for support and talk about how we can help you.

At this appointment we will decide whether you would benefit from ongoing appointments with us and arrange them with you. These are usually weekly to start with and we will do our best to work these around your timetable and other commitments.

If we feel that we can’t support you appropriately, or you would like us to refer you elsewhere, we are happy to refer you to a number of outside agencies such as Motiv8, Victim Support, the Drug and Alcohol Team, Isle of Man Constabulary, Manx Minds and Community Wellbeing.

Unfortunately we cannot directly refer you to CAMHS or CMHSA, but we can give you advice and guidance on getting a referral via your GP.

Yes – we regularly work alongside other agencies to support students.

If you would like ongoing support from the Welfare Team while still under another outside agency, we would normally require you to sign an information sharing agreement, which will allow us to work with them, for your benefit.

It’s important to note that often we are unable to offer you support that goes beyond the support they currently offer, and we won’t go against the advice and guidance they have given you.

We are not qualified to give you a diagnosis of any conditions, but we can offer you support while you seek a diagnosis through the appropriate medical channels.
