UCM Celebrates National Careers Week

Students from UCM celebrated National Careers Week with a programme of events designed to inspire students for their future.

Throughout the week, UCM held careers-focussed, informal events where students had the opportunity to meet with representatives from a wide range of industries to find out about jobs in that sector, explore opportunities for them and learn about different career journeys.

Representatives from Isle of Man Steam Packet, Unifrog, IFGL, Isle Listen, Renegade Vintage, Utmost international, Royal Navy Attract Team, Government Office of Human Resources, Greenlight TV, Rossborough Insurance, and The Vanilla Room, as well as representatives from DESC careers team, Veterinary Nursing, Horticulture and Barbering, attended the events.

Caroline Walter, UCM’s Employability & Skills Coordinator, said: ‘Throughout the academic year our students have many opportunities to develop their employability skills, find out about career pathways and meet with employers. As well as meaningful work placements which are embedded into most of our fulltime courses, we host events around careers, volunteering, job opportunities, CV writing and interview skills. It’s important that when our students leave UCM they are well-equipped for their next step.

‘Thank you to all of the individuals and businesses who were involved with our National Careers Week events. Over the last few months I’ve been asking students what industries they would like represented, so it’s fantastic to be able to give the students the opportunity to make those connections.’

Nathan Douglas, one of UCM’s Student Council added: ‘I really enjoyed learning more about the wide range of industries and careers on the Island, and the opportunities available to me. It was also eye-opening to explore the different career journeys that people have had, and the importance of building transferable skills.’

National Careers Week is a UK, one-week celebration which aims to develop awareness and excitement around future pathways for young people.
