Skills Test Competition at UCM

Next month students at UCM will be competing against each other and the clock, in a college-wide event that is open to the public to watch.

Throughout the week students will compete in their subject areas to showcase the high level of skills they are learning through their courses.

The events start on Tuesday 12th March with ‘Battle of the Pans’ which tests the culinary skills of the Hospitality, Catering and Food Service students using Manx produce, Barbering students will be showcasing their fading skills, and the Sport skills test students will be analysing sports data and presenting a fitness plan.

On Wednesday Engineering students will compete at the Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre. The line-up for Thursday includes Computer Game Development, Motor Vehicle, Business, and the Hair & Beauty ‘A day out at Ascot’ Skills Test which will see the students preparing their models’ hair, make-up and nails.

The final day of the week-long event includes tests for five Construction disciplines. Additionally, there will be a display of the items produced by inmates from the Isle of Man Prison who have also been set a skills test as part of the education programme.

UCM’s Principal Jesamine Kelly said: ‘We’ve been running skills tests at UCM for a number of years now and it’s exciting to see so many subject areas getting involved this year. The skills test events are a great opportunity for students to show their skills to future employers. For anyone who is interested in studying a particular subject, it’s also a good chance for them to visit our learning environments to see the skills they too could learn.

‘We’re very grateful to the generous support from local business/organisations which have helped with materials and prizes, including Isle of Man Creamery, Food & Drink Circle Swagelok, RLC Ronaldsway, Manx Utilities, Alan Howard, Ellisons, Wella, Kenney, Digital Isle of Man, Godot, Triumph, Strix, Target Tools, Be Barber Equipment, Isle of Man Sport, Manx Sport & Recreation, Elite Fitness, Build It, Cool Studios, Game Art 2D and Acclaim Ltd.

The events will take place at multiple locations including UCM’s Homefield Road Campus, The Hills Meadow Campus and the Isle of Man Sports Institute.
