Latest Just for Fun Courses Launched

As we launch our latest Just for Fun Courses, starting in September, Kerry Birchall, who oversees our Adult Learning provision, explains why adults learning skills just for fun is so important.

“In a fast-paced world filled with responsibilities and obligations, and in times where people have less disposable income, the concept of learning for fun might seem like an indulgence however, adults engaging in learning activities that are just for fun can have a significant positive impact on mental, emotional and social wellbeing; supporting a more balanced and fulfilling life.

As adults explore various skills and interests, they embrace the joy of learning which reinforces the idea that knowledge is a journey not a destination.

Learning new skills, whatever the skill, stimulates the brain's cognitive functions. Engaging in mental exercises, such as problem-solving and creativity, enhances cognitive flexibility and helps form new neural connections, which can improve memory retention and slow cognitive decline associated with ageing.

Engaging in activities that spark joy, curiosity and enthusiasm can act as a form of therapeutic escape from the pressures of daily life. Creative activities such as painting, dancing and cooking enable adults to unwind and redirect their focus away from stressors which prompts wellbeing and relaxation.

Learning just for fun is also a great way to boost self-esteem and confidence which often transfer to other areas of life.

Selecting a face-to-face course creates opportunities for social interaction and community building. These experiences can help combat feelings of isolation and foster a sense of belonging. We often see people who sign up to a just for fun course, or a leisure course as we used to call them, continuing their friendships once the course has finished.

There really are so many ways that learning a new skill, hobby or language can benefit adults at all ages.”

Some of our ‘Just for Fun’ courses include Videography for Social Media, Pottery, Astronomy, Floral Art, Tai Chi, Ballroom Dancing, Swedish Massage, Interior Design, Christmas Gifts, Spanish and Guitar.
