New Access to Higher Education Course for Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare at UCM

A new Access to Higher Education Course for Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals is now available at University College Isle of Man (UCM).

The course, which is a level 3 qualification, is designed for people aged 18 or over who want to become a nurse, midwife or allied health professional but don’t have the qualifications required for university level study.

In this one-year, full time course, students will study core modules in Biology, Psychology and Sociology as well units that develop the students’ academic skills in preparation for university.

The qualification is equivalent to and carry the same UCAS points as three A-levels.

UCM’s Head of Faculty for Wellbeing, Karen Davies said: ‘This is a great course for mature learners who want to pursue a career in nursing, midwifery or a health-related profession, but don’t have the entry requirements for studying at university or with Manx Care. An Access to Higher Education course is also great for someone who has been out of education for some time and wants to develop knowledge and confidence before taking the plunge into studying a degree.

‘UCM is a supportive and empowering place, so we’re pleased to be offering another Access to Higher Education course which helps mature students to progress their education and careers.’

Julie Edge MHK, Minister for Education Sport and Culture, added: ‘By introducing these exciting new courses, we're not just expanding education; we're aligning with the Island Plan's commitment to empower our youth and shape a workforce ready for the challenges of tomorrow.

‘These courses demonstrate our dedication to providing relevant, forward-thinking and island-based education that equips our students with the skills needed to thrive in the ever-evolving landscape of the future workforce.’

Entry to this course requires students to hold GCSEs in Maths & English at grade C or above. UCM offers English and Maths up to GCSE level for free.
