Dr Douglas G. Fox, Senior Research Scientist (Emeritus) at Colorado State University, USA, will be delivering the keynote presentation at this year’s Research Festival in October.
The keynote address will centre on the importance of research and its value in working towards a more sustainable future. with a particular focus on our experiences with climate change.
Dr Fox was among the leaders of the team of scientists who authored the United Nations IPCC’s Second Assessment Report on Climate Change, and, as such, shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former Vice President of the United States, Al Gore.
After the success of last year’s festival, the theme is continuing to focus on ‘Secure, Vibrant Sustainable’ in line with the Island Plan. Dr Fox is no stranger to this subject matter, with a career spanning over five decades in science, over 100 peer-reviewed and technical publications authored or co-authored, and being the former Chief Meteorologist for the US Department of Agriculture, Forest Service.
Dr Fox said “I am delighted to be joining UCM for its fifth annual Research Festival, and to be this year’s keynote speaker, highlighting the importance of a more sustainable future, whilst addressing some of the challenges we face and the added value research can provide.
“I have spent the past 20 years splitting my time between Colorado, USA, and the Isle of Man, a place my wife and I truly consider our home. So it feels special to be on the Island at this event, discussing a topic I am very passionate about. I look forward to meeting with other researchers and hearing about their findings.”
This year’s Research Festival will be held on Friday 13th October 2023 at the Nunnery Campus, UCM’s hub for Higher Education. UCM will be announcing the full line up, along with details of how to register for the event soon.
