Record Numbers Attend UCM Graduates’ Ceremony

University College Isle of Man (UCM) held its annual Graduates’ Ceremony at the Villa Marina, Douglas to congratulate students who have completed a degree, degree-level or postgraduate qualification.

This year, 157 students completed their studies, with 105 UCM students attending the event. UCM was also pleased to welcome Manx graduates who had studied at UK Universities but couldn’t attend their graduation ceremonies across. 

The ceremony was officially opened by The Lieutenant Governor Sir John Lorimer who spoke of his pride for the Island’s graduates and how their dedication to learning is strengthening the future of the Island.

Professor Kurt Allman, the Executive Dean of the Business School at the University of Chester, presented the awards for the degrees and postgraduate degrees which are validated by the University of Chester. Teresa Cope, CEO of Manx Care, presented the awards for the Nursing pathways and Geoff Moorcroft, UCM Governor and Director of Educational Research and Projects at the Department for Education, Sport and Culture presented the awards to the students who had studied at UK Universities. 

The Liam Arrowsmith Higher Education Student of the Year award, which is kindly sponsored by Chris Arrowsmith in memory of his son who was a UCM student, was awarded to BA (Hons) History & Heritage student Sarah Kerruish for her commitment to her studies and her outstanding research into accessibility of archaeological sites for people with autism.

Professor Ken Mills was announced at this year’s Honorary Fellow. In addition to Professor Mills’ impressive academic background he is also a valued member of UCM’s Research Ethics and Governance committee and in 2021 became the Chair of UCM’s Research Panel.

(Mrs) Jesamine Kelly, UCM Principal, closed the ceremony by saying: ‘The last two years have tested you, our students, and being at our Graduates’ Ceremony this year proves that not only did you get through this difficult period, but you excelled, something you all should be incredibly proud of.’
