Real Life Learning for UCM’s Plumbing Students

A group of UCM’s construction students get a taste of life in the industry with help from Dandara.

A group of 12 first year plumbing students enjoyed a tour of Dandara’s Reayrt Mie site in Ballasalla to learn more about working on a building site. The tour started with properties in the first stages of development, right through to seeing finished homes.

Students learned about how large sites operate from a Health and Safety perspective and were able to see how their learning in the classroom relates to real practice in the industry.

The students, who were accompanied by their lecturers, had the opportunity to look at the plumbing setup inside the finished houses and the high-quality specification and finish. During the visit they also met with Dandara’s team at the Head Office in Douglas.

Plumbing Lecturer Lee McGoldrick, who organised the tour, said: ‘A huge thank you to Dandara for inviting our students to visit the site in Ballasalla. At UCM we’re fortunate to have the opportunity to see some fantastic real working environments which provides our students with excellent hands-on learning, so it’s great for them to visit a live site such as Reayrt Mie to see how their learning is really coming to life.

(Mrs) Sam Warren, Head of the Environment and Sustainability Faculty at UCM added: ‘Across the whole of UCM we encourage students to build relationships in their respective industries through inviting employers in and attending events and work placements which are part of their course. Visiting Dandara’s Head Office and site offered our students a great opportunity to build these networks for when they complete their studies with us.’

Ciaran Downey, Housing Director of Dandara added: ‘We were delighted to welcome students from UCM to visit us at our HQ and have a look around our site. We’re always keen to work with students to help expand their skills and get a taste of life in our industry.’
