What is the course about?

Immerse yourself in the science of sport to help develop the high-performance athletes of today and tomorrow. Your studies will allow you to develop the essential knowledge and skills required to pursue a wide range of careers in sport and sports performance.

What subjects/units/modules will I study?

As part of your course, you will:

Develop expertise in the interdisciplinary sciences of sport performance, drawing on disciplines including physiology, event management, sports science and coaching, sports development, applied physiology, sports leadership and research.

Advanced practical and research techniques and have the confidence to use performance-measuring equipment and technologies to evaluate athletes throughout stages of their development

Study performance approaches within individual and team contexts and learn to apply these models to any sporting environment.

Engage in work-related learning and practical placements in multiple sport settings and with our industry partners.

As you apply your knowledge, you’ll refine your self-awareness, becoming a sport performance practitioner capable of understanding and responding to your clients’ individual needs helping them achieve their performance objectives while also maintaining or enhancing their health and wellbeing needs.

You will continue to study and develop specific modules from year 1 on your chosen pathway of Sport Science for Sports Performance

Will I need a DBS check for this course?

If you accept a formal offer from UCM you will be required to apply for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure,indicating that you meet the mandatory criteria of Clearance to Work with Children and/or Vulnerable Adults. Further information will be sent to you after you have firmly accepted an offer.

When will I get a timetable?

You will receive your completed timetable during induction, which takes place in September, however you may receive a draft timetable before then.

What happens once I have applied?

We will send you an email to let you know we have received your application. Once we have evaluated your application, we may invite you to come in for a chat so that we can discuss the degree in more detail with you, or we may offer you a place on the degree on the condition that you achieve 96 UCAS points.

Popular Courses

Sometimes we get a high volume of applications for particular courses. If your first-choice course is popular, we’ll let you know and ask if you would like us to process your second choice course as well. This doesn’t mean you won’t be considered for your first choice – it just provides you with a back-up plan.

International/UK Applicants

If you are an international/UK applicant someone from UCM will contact you remotely. It is essential that you have uploaded copies of your results/certificates and relevant translations of grades/certificates. Please note, if you are an international applicant and your application is received later than the end of May (i.e. three months before the start of the academic year) we will not be able to process it as the immigration processes would exceed the timescale required to start in September.

Days and hours of attendance (ideally a timetable, if not approx.)

Guided Learning Hours for the course are 360, split over the course of the academic year. There will be opportunities for further learning on placements throughout the year.

Campus

Practical and teaching elements of the course will be carried out at several locations including UCM AMTC Campus and Nunnery Campus, National Sports Centre, schools, sports clubs and fitness centres.

What are my progression and career options?

Whether you want to pursue a career within high performance sport as a performance analyst, strength and conditioning coach, sport and exercise scientist or one of the many other professional roles aligned to sport and exercise science the flexible and interdisciplinary nature of this degree will allow you to take your career in a number of directions. You could also choose to develop your expertise further with masters programme study in an aligned professional discipline for example, Chartered Physiotherapy, Nutrition, Strength and Conditioning, Psychology or Physiology. In addition to Sporting pathways, skills you will develop and modules you will complete are in demand with many employers across many different industry sectors.

How will I be assessed?

All modules, core and optional, are assessed through a combination of the following: written assignments and reports; presentations; portfolios of work and examination.

To be successful you will be required to show a high level of commitment to your studies, prioritising your work and managing your time, and demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills.

Entry requirements

96 UCAS tariff points from a level 3* qualification –all subjects accepted.
